The health benefits of bone broth
Bone broth is an ideal food for supporting gut and digestive system health. Homemade bone broth is rich in the amino acid glutamine which gut cells (enterocytes) require for energy, along with highly available minerals including calcium and easily absorbed nutrients.
- Pieces of beef marrow bones (available from your local friendly butcher) or a chicken carcass (left over from your Sunday roast!
- 1 sliced carrot
- 1 Sliced onion
- 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Himalayan salt or sea salt
- Sprinkle of Black pepper
- 1/2 tsp turmeric (anti-inflammatory)
Place bones, vinegar, carrot, spice and salt in a large slow cooker, cover with 3 litres of filtered water and simmer for 6 - 24 hours on Low.
Strain through a sieve and store in the fridge. (The fat layer can be skimmed off the bone broth when cooled and used as a cooking fat for roast veg etc.)
This delicious broth can be used as a stock in sauces, risotto, soup etc or simply as a soothing & nourishing warm drink to provide essential amino acids and minerals.
Roast Chicken and Homemade Chicken Stock
Here is a short video showing how I roast chicken and then turn the carcass into chicken stock!
(I roasted two chickens on this occasion but one is fine to use if you want a smaller quantity).
